Current Status of AYUSH in West Bengal

At the apex level, the AYUSH Branch operates under the administrative control of the Department of Health and Family Welfare, Government of West Bengal. Following are the State Government Directorates and major offices under AYUSH:








Following National AYUSH Institutes are situated in the state of West Bengal:

  • National Institute of Homoeopathy, Salt Lake.
  • National Research Institute of Ayurvedic Drug Development, Salt Lake.

In addition, at present, there are 11 Homeopathic Colleges (4 state owned and 7 private), 4 Ayurvedic/ pharmacy Colleges (3 State owned and 2 Private), and 1 private Unani College. There is also a private run Institute namely 'Chagpori Tibetan Medical Institute' on Sowa Rigpa system of medicine in the Darjeeling District, a system of treatment which has recently been recognised as one of the approved system of medicine in the country.

There are 841 State Homeopathic/ Ayurvedic Dispensaries, including those located in Primary Health Centres, Rural Hospitals, Block Primary Health Centres, Sub-Divisional Hospitals, District Hospitals, and State General Hospitals. In addition, there are 1178 sanctioned GP level dispensaries funded by the State Government and 500 GP level one-man dispensaries funded by NHM. About 1.3 Crore patients are treated under AYUSH every year in the state.
